A Retro RPG That’s More Than a Throwback!

 

8-Bit Adventures 2 is an all-new, story-driven JRPG experience that mixes modern design with retro style. Rather than simply copying the classics or appealing to nostalgia, the goal is to create a brand new experience while retaining the charm and depth of the games we love.

 

Explore a vast and varied world, brought to life by vibrant 8-Bit graphics, memorable NES-accurate music, and people with personality. Players can enjoy strategic, fast-paced combat that focuses on unique character traits, swapping party members, managing the turn order, and using a variety of unique skills (including powerful Omega Bursts) – no mandatory grinding required!

 

This project is entirely self-funded, so we’re not looking for money; just your interest, feedback, and support ahead of the release later in 2018! 8-Bit Adventures 2 is currently planned for Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.  

At its core, 8-Bit Adventures 2 is a classic JRPG experience through and through. But just because it’s familiar doesn’t mean it can’t be fresh!

 

Combat is turn-based, and combines elements of games like Final Fantasy X and Mother 3. Enemies appear on the Overworld map, and if they touch you, you enter a battle – there are no random encounters. There are 7 playable characters, and between them they have 100 Abilities at their disposal – including Combo and Trio Abilities (ala Chrono Trigger), as well as powerful Omega Bursts (similar to a Limit Break)! You can also outfit your characters with special Augments which grant powerful enhancements – everything from increasing a party member’s HP to adding special effects to their attacks.

 

While only 3 party members can be active in battle at once, you can swap characters in and out whenever you’d like. And you’ll need to leverage everyone’s strengths if you’re going to test your mettle against the game’s 99 unique foes! However, if one of the fiends gets the better of you, don’t worry – you can retry the battle with all of your items intact, as many times as you’d like. The goal is for a balanced experience that requires strategy but doesn’t waste your time.

 

Exploration is the other cornerstone of 8-Bit Adventures 2, and while mechanically simple, the wide range of environments and characters keep things interesting. Talk with townspeople to hear a personal story, an observation, a history lesson, or just a joke! Then in more dangerous realms (be it an ancient ruin, poison forest, or neon cityscape), you’ll find unique gimmicks (e.g. mine carts), occasional puzzles, and treasures galore. All up, the game features 12 Cities and 25 Dungeons! And, of course, it wouldn’t be a JRPG if you couldn’t traverse a World Map via Airship, hunting down hidden rewards and optional areas.

The Sun sets over the shrouded desert landscape, bathing the sands in brilliant shades of orange, red and pink. A chill wind blows over the dunes, gathering dust in its wake. Through the gale strides a determined figure, his head held low – a travel cloak his only defence against the desert’s assault.

 

Abruptly, the wind dies down; the figure looks up, seizing the chance to regain his bearings. And then he sees it. After days of searching, his goal is in sight: The ruins the Computer spoke of, and the start of another adventure.

“I’ll be back soon…I promise.”

 

The world of 8-Bit Adventures is unique in that it is literally set inside of a video game, and this approach creates many novel opportunities. Everyone knows what a video game glitch is – something that shouldn’t exist, but has the power to distort a game world in bizarre and seemingly impossible ways. The antagonist of 8-Bit Adventures 2 is based upon this concept, taking the form of an unwanted and mistreated child known as the Glitch.

 

Faced with erasure, the Glitch lashes out, distorting the world and threatening its people. It’s up to the player’s party of 7 distinct characters to undo these distortions and defeat the Glitch. But to do so, they’ll need to brave dozens of dungeons, defeat deadly enemies, and even travel to other worlds!

 

With all that said, the game doesn’t feature some sort of Meta, fourth-wall-breaking narrative. 8-Bit Adventures 2 is a character-driven tale, more akin to games like Final Fantasy IX. While the conflict with the Glitch drives the overall story forward, the personal struggles and relationships of your party members give the game its heart. ·       Engaging, Character-driven Story with Great Pacing & Meaningful Moments!

An earnest story that focuses more on personal tales than simply ‘saving the world’. I’ve written over 100, 000 words so far, and every line of dialogue has been meticulously timed, to mimic the way that people actually speak. Plus, the narrative is carefully paced to ensure that the plot is always moving and your time is never wasted!

 

·       Beautiful, Vibrant 8-Bit graphics that bring the world to life!

While pixel art is inherently nostalgic for many of us, there’s a lot more to the visuals of 8-Bit Adventures 2. Our artist has really tried to do something special and evolve the standard 8-bit graphical style, while maintaining several of its key limitations. Learn more in the Art section below, but I think the visuals speak for themselves! 

 

·       Unforgettable NES-like Music with retro charm!

Using Famitracker, our composer has managed to not only capture the sound and feel of a classic JRPG chiptune soundtrack, but develop new techniques and instrumentation to build upon what’s come before. The full OST features over 60 unique compositions, making every area and each encounter feel unique!

 

·       Explore Two Very Different Worlds - In the Computer World, Anything Goes!

The Computer World is a realm which operates behind-the-scenes of the real world. To stop the Glitch, you must travel to the four corners of this realm - each based on a technical aspect of video games (Sound, Graphics, Memory, and the Processor). And these are some of the most unique areas in the game. One, for example, has you solving a robot murder mystery!

 

·       A Villain with a Twist - the Glitch!

The Glitch is a persistent foe from beginning to end, and, like any character, he changes and develops over the course of the story. His power to corrupt the world is unique, and his personality unstable; a dangerous combination!

As you progress through the game, you’ll meet a wide variety of friends and foes. So today, let’s focus on the playable characters. We’re keeping one a secret, though!

 

Warrior (Named by Player) – One of the three heroes who defeated the Dust two years ago, he is a kind-hearted soldier with a strong sense of responsibility. Having settled down with Thief in his home town of Azureus, he thought his adventuring days were over. But now a new threat has appeared, and Warrior has gone missing…

 

Thief (Named by Player) – Thief grew up in poverty on the streets of Pheopolis. Despite her sharp tongue, she has a heart of gold, and used to take care of other orphans like herself. After defeating the Dust, she settled down with Warrior in Azureus, content she’d finally found the life she’d always wanted. However, when Warrior disappears, she finds herself on a brand new journey!

 

Charlie – A quick-witted and impulsive young man, whose big mouth often gets the better of him. Charlie was one of the orphans that Thief took care of, and he grew up idolising her. After the defeat of the Dust, Thief asked Queen Elena of Pheopolis to take him and the other orphans into her care. Charlie has spent the last two years growing up in Pheopolis Castle, training hard to become just like his hero!

 

Emma – A polite, strong, sweet young woman, Emma is a skilled Martial Artist. When she was younger, an accident claimed both the lives of her parents and her sight. She was taken in and trained by her Grandpa, until he passed away. Now, Emma spends most of her time alone, so she can seem a bit shy at first. But she’s always happy to help someone in need; especially when it involves applying her Grandpa’s lessons in battle!

 

Mage (Named by Player) – A wise, old man with magical abilities and a thirst for knowledge. Formerly known as the Red Mage, he is one of the last in a long line of Magi. He’s lived for centuries, protecting a mystical artefact known as the Red Orb. After vanquishing the Dust, that burden was lifted from him, and he now lives with his long-lost love Adele (the Green Mage) in Niveus.

 

Robot (Named by Player) – An Exterminator-class robot, model 5102 – designation C-28. Built by the Computer, he is designed to hunt down and eliminate all bugs and anomalies. His mission? Find and destroy the Glitch. Despite his cold, logical exterior, Robot does have a personality – he just never gets the joke!

If you’re like me, you’ve probably seen a lot of 8-bit games in the last decade, and you may be wondering what sets this one apart. In 8-Bit Adventures 2, the art style is designed to complement the story.

 

As stated above, the world of 8-Bit Adventures 2 is technically set inside of a video game. While this concept is only a background element (there’s no “We’re in a video game” moment; it’s just the world that these characters exist in), it allows unique possibilities like the Computer World and the Glitch. So an 8-bit art style was the best way to aesthetically complement and convey this concept, especially given the genre.  

 

However, that’s not to say we compromised the visuals for the sake of the story in any way! Our artist has spent the last 3 years trying to evolve the standard 8-bit graphical style, while maintaining several of its key limitations – much like Shovel Knight. For example, while we use the NES colour palette, we aren’t limited by its hardware, and so can display as many colours on a single screen as we want.

 

This approach has created a vibrant, detailed, animated look that conveys variety and personality in every pixel. Whether it’s exploring a lively town or dark dungeon, travelling the world via Airship, the meticulously detailed backgrounds and smooth attack animations in combat, the zany Earthbound-esque enemies, or the Ninja Gaiden inspired cinematic cutscenes – I truly believe we made the right choice with this art style.

The demo received an update in April that added a bonus playable character, an optional boss fight, and the ability to sprint, alongside numerous other fixes and tweaks. 

 

Please note, however, that this demo still includes random battles, from an earlier stage of development. It’s a ‘First Look’ Demo for a reason, so while it’s representative of the final product, there will be several tweaks and changes.

 

8-Bit Adventures 2 will be released on Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.

 

The first priority is to launch the game on Windows. However, the Mac and Linux versions won’t be far behind! If they are not available on the same day as the Windows version, then they will become my next priority. The game features options for Gamepad support (e.g. Xbox and Playstation controllers) as well as Mouse and Keyboard controls. 

 

Beyond the initial launch, one of my biggest hopes is to release 8-Bit Adventures 2 on Nintendo Switch. There are many factors that will determine whether or not this is able to happen (including the game’s success on existing platforms). I’m a small developer, but I think the Switch is the perfect place for this kind of experience and I am dedicated to making it happen if at all possible. 8-Bit Adventures 2 is made by a small team of freelance developers. Despite my limited budget, everyone has given it their all and I sincerely believe what we’ve created is worth any RPG fan’s time.

I’ve worked as an independent developer for seven years now, and one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is finding and connecting with the right audience for my games. Not to mention finding opportunities for exposure and visibility amongst a sea of high quality releases.

 

The Square Enix Collective provides an incredible opportunity to connect with an audience who love the same games as we do. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Seiken Densetsu, Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi – these classics are the reason we’re all fans of Square Enix. And if you love those games, then I believe there’s a great chance you’ll love 8-Bit Adventures 2 as well!

 

On a personal note, I’ve put nearly every dollar I’ve earned from my last two games (8-Bit Adventures 1 and Tales Across Time) into creating 8-Bit Adventures 2. This game is quite literally the culmination of my entire career so far! I truly love making games, because I love telling stories and making people happy; that’s my passion.

 

However, I also need to make enough money to support myself and fund future projects. The success or failure of 8-Bit Adventures 2 will determine whether or not I’m able to do that. As I said at the top of this page, we’re not asking for funding – your feedback, support, fan creations, enthusiasm…even criticisms all help to get the game out there. I can’t do it alone, but together I believe we can make 8-Bit Adventures 2 a success!

  • Joshua Hallaran - Lead Developer/Game Designer/Writer
    Hi there! My name’s Josh Hallaran and I’m an Australian indie developer, working under the company name Critical Games since 2011. I’m best known for creating JRPGs on the PC - notably 8-Bit Adventures 1 & Tales Across Time. I’m currently hard at work on 8-Bit Adventures 2, where I do everything from writing to level design to bug fixing and beyond. Generally, if it’s not graphics or music, it’s my job. I’m sure it’s pretty obvious, but I love classic JRPGs! Chrono Trigger is my all-time favourite game, closely followed by Final Fantasy IX and Dragon Quest VIII. I’ve wanted to be a game developer since I was 6 years old, and 8-Bit Adventures 2 is the result of many hundreds of hours spent playing and studying the works of legends like Hironobu Sakaguchi, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Yuji Horii.
  • Sebastian Galvez - Composer
    Also known as Carfonu, Sebastian is a freelance composer from Chile with an amazingly versatile skill set. He composed the soundtrack for the first 8-Bit Adventures using Famitracker (software which mimics the NES’ sound capabilities), and his work elevated every moment of that game. Sebastian always seems to know exactly what an area or scene needs! I was very grateful when he agreed to return for the sequel, and in total he has composed over 60 pieces of music for this new soundtrack! So I really think players who love chiptune music are in for a treat. Arguably the best compliment I can give his work is that despite having spent literally hundreds of hours listening to it, I still enjoy the music just as much as when I first heard it!   • Jerram - Fahey Artist
    Jerram is a freelance pixel artist (not to mention a fellow Australian) with an impressive amount of insight. His attention to detail and use of light, shading and colour continually amazes me. He drew the character sprites for 8-Bit Adventures 1, but, due to the meagre budget, his involvement was unfortunately very limited. For the sequel, I knew that we needed to dramatically improve the presentation, and Jerram was the perfect man for the job. So in 8-Bit Adventures 2, he’s drawn every attack, character, environment, background, and monster you’ll see. I think his work truly speaks for itself!     Dr “iBolt” Dhoom is a freelance programmer who coded the battle system for 8-Bit Adventures 2.     Ryan is a Harvey award nominated comic artist, best known for his work on the Mega Man, Sonic, and Dexter’s Lab comic book series’. Jerram’s character art already featured a bit of a late-80s/early-90s Anime vibe, so I was looking for someone who could capture that style. Ryan was a perfect fit! He very kindly agreed to draw a promotional image for 8-Bit Adventures 2 (the picture at the top of this page), and I think he did an incredible job capturing the personality of the characters in his own signature style!
