Dragon of Legends banner 1

Dragon of Legends is an action based MMORPG for PC, Mac, and Mobile platforms heavily influenced by the mythic cycle of Gaelic Ireland and Norse mythology, where the lights of faeries border the realms of darkness.

Two alliances have emerged across the continent, both struggling for supremacy over the land and as these great powers battle one another for control of Hávamál – darker forces gather to destroy them. Players from around the world can assume the roles of customizable heroic fantasy characters, and explore a lush 2D retro-inspired world full of mystery, danger, and countless adventure.

After creating your own custom character and selecting a faction, you will set out on an epic quest to conquer evil and save the lands of Havamal from impending doom, or succumb to the darkness and act as an agent of destruction. You will have your own background, racial history, and character specific storyline that will provide direction, and motivation behind all of your actions. Along your adventures you will acquire new equipment and learn powerful skills to aid you on your path, and you will be constantly interacting with other players from around the world. In order to defeat the most complicated and challenging dungeons, you must strategically coordinate your efforts and work effectively as a team to reap the rewards. You can band together with like-minded players in clans and guilds and wage war against other rival factions - or even turn on your own.

The Norse - Pagans and savages of the most unrestrained and pitiless type, these sea raiders are renowned for their fearlessness in battle and refusal to surrender. Their skilled smiths produce the finest steel in Hávamál.

The Celts - Fierce warriors and proud and industrious cattle herders, the Celts live a harmonious and magical relationship with the natural world. Proud warriors, they will fight viciously to protect their cherished traditions and way of life.

Diverse Class System - We want Dragon of Legends to be as robust as other contemporary MMORPGs on the market, and we have gone to great lengths to ensure a wide variety of classes that will cater to your own specific play style. Our classes are inspired by their own cultural origins, and fuction differently depending on what faction you are aligned with. These cultures are radically different, but the class roles are functionally the same. For example, the Norse Bondsmen will have different skills and abilities than their opposite the Celtic Phalanx, but will both be able to endure a massive amount of damage and tank effectively on the battlefield.

An immersive narrative experience is essential to any quality RPG, and the story we wish to tell you is the stuff of legends. Choices that you make will have serious ramifications in the game world, and drastically alter your experience based on the decisions you make. Everything you do will be recorded in your own unique journal which can be publicly viewable. Did you slay the fierce giants guarding Dagda’s Tomb? Or perhaps you turned on your allies and slaughtered them all in cold blood - all of your actions will stay with you throughout your character’s life.

                                               Dragon of Legends Book

A brief synopsis of the plot...

The ever watchful eternal Dragon has become aware of the darker motivations of Balor the One Eyed and how he has been seduced by Loki’s trickery, and must act accordingly. If Loki is to be set free and Ragnarök actually happened, that would be the complete and utter end of the universe. This cannot be allowed to happen. The only logical course of action that the Dragon could think of, was to begin tightening its grip on the world of Hávamál. Massive continents began to shift closer together, and mass paranoia spread across the land as the world shook and trembled with great force. The world, its Gods, and all of its life would be destroyed in the process, but after this grievous act the hourglass of time would reset and the world would begin anew. The Gods pleaded to the Dragon not to let this happen, but it was adamant in its decision. The Dragon revealed that only the race of humans would be able to stop these events, and the world’s fate was in their hands - if Loki was to fall in battle by the hands of a mortal, the Dragon would release its suffocating grip on Hávamál and all would be well once again...

We’ve been toiling away on an original soundtrack for Dragon of Legends. We have decided to draw inspiration from Traditional European Music, as well as other soundtracks from our favourite childhood games. Take a listen to our music so far and get psyched to take a trip down memory lane.

The studio was originally founded by Michael Huynh, Nathan Dworzak, and Parker Martin as Thrive! Entertainment on July 27, 2013. The team started designing creative multimedia solutions for small companies, but a year later they decided to follow their passions and made the switch into the gaming industry. In the early days the company focused on creating game ports and games for other studios. In mid 2014 the company changed its name to Thrive Games, and officially started research and development for their next game title, Dragon of Legends.

Why Square Enix Indie Collective?

Being an independent studio and developing Dragon of Legends under our own terms has been a challenging experience, but we are now at the point where we need the help and support of the community. After hearing about Square Enix’s Indie Collective program - it seemed like a fantastic opportunity for us to increase awareness about our game, and get feedback on how we can improve it. It’s no secret that Dragon of Legends is heavily inspired by Square’s earlier works ranging from Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, and Secret of Evermore to name a few, so having a chance to work with Square Enix, the people who sparked our passions with the video game industry, would truly be amazing.

Can't edit posts so forgive me as I follow up here: what does this game have that makes it stand out from others, notably Death's Gambit and Eitr? Eitr has combos, blocking and dodging. Death's Gambit also has blocking, bow shooting, seems to lack combos but has very fluent animations and something like a grappling hook. So far, Dragon of legend seems to have 1 attack, no blocking and wonky movement. I love pixel-style games and would buy this but please make it more juicy and combat flow better

As a concerned, potential buyer, these concern me the most: • seems to have no diagonal movement (come on) • the combat showed in the trailer is literally one type of attack With that said, will diagonal movement be added and can we expect some form of a more engaging combat than this (some combos, skills that also fluently continue from normal attacks and so on)?

hey zizterkhaar! thanks for the comment! there is diagonal movement in dragon of legends, and that trailer is simply a teaser. i'm going to be releasing an update today, so you can check that out for more information regarding skills and attacks.

Wow, it's going to take a while for those of us who like to see both sides of a story start to make our vote even seem to matter. I guess it doesn't help that I'm the first vote just now either. On a side note, will the player 'guilds' be able to have chars of both factions in them? Or will they be faction locked? Personally, I like the idea of 'guilds' being faction open, with the 'guild' leaders deciding if they want to be faction locked or not.

haha yea, there's a lot of votes for norse or celts respectively, so both is going to be really low for a while :P and don't want to spoil the surprise, but that may be something we are working on ;)

Hey all I know I said we were going to do another update regarding music, but we are swamped with trying to market and advance the game forward. We just went to a comic con this past weekend to spread the word to people in person :D Here's the album if you want to see: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1652608554958379.1073741832.1484586165093953

Oops, just noticed your little side poll. Can you add a 'both' option? I typically play multiple chars just so that I can mess around with all of the options, including seeing the differences between factions.

So aside from warrior and ranger what job classes do you plan to make? i imagine youll have different names for them but I play Final fantasy so bare with me for the examples; WhiteMage, BlackMage, RedMage, Summoner, Paladin, DarkKnight, Thief, Dragoon, BeastMaster, BlueMage. I figure samurai and ninja are out of the question since it would be too much of a stretch to fit in with the theme you are working with, but a lot of these could still work with a new title in place. Keep up the good work!

Hey Crudenshal! Thanks for the comment! The classes we have come up with are heavily inspired from final fantasy, but also drawing from the mmo archetypes, such as tank, dps, heal, support, utility, etc. Going to be getting into the specifics of this stuff during the Kickstarter campaign so stay tuned ;)

Wow, I am really excited for this actually, I hav always been into these 2D games, and it all started with final fantasy. I never though you would go this route, but am very glad your are! And when it comes to music, it should definitly be within the common lyrical or thematic focus on Norse mythology. Keep up the great work, and I'll be checking in very regularly! :)

Grew up with the Legend of Zelda and I just can't get into the MMORPG of today even though they look fun. What seems like the perfect blend of the two in both design and story fits me to a tee. I'd definitely back it and I will be first in line to play once it hits consoles.

Will you be doing an update with more information regarding the character development system? Personally I'm rather fond of games with a skill tree system more like Diablo II or Titan Quest, and it sounds like DoL could go the Diablo II path (although I do prefer being able to max out everything in a single sub-tree, which Diablo II just didn't have the skill points for). The character development system will have a significant impact on whether or not I take time away from FFXIV for it.

the next update we have planned is going to be discussing the music and our research regarding the traditional music we are drawing influence from, but i will be sure to share more information about the character progression system in time. but short answer - it's going to be skill tree based much like diablo 2, with character specific specialization options influenced from games like wow
